Times have changed drastically and gone are the days, when the word stress was never heard of. In our 21st century lifestyle, stress is a very common word. Even children undergo stress in today’s lifestyle. Stress to some extent is good as it stimulates us to face challenges at work and home, but if stress crosses manageable boundaries, then it is time to wake up and take action. Stress is not only emotional, but also physical.
If you feel anxious all the time, loose sleep, have digestive problems, or are gaining weight, it might be most probably stress playing havoc on your body. Stress management has become very important in everybody’s life.
Identify the Source of Stress:
The first most important step in stress management is the identification of its source. Thought it is very easily said than done, but you need to take out some time ask yourself the following questions:
- Do you take up too much in your hands?
- Is the stress temporary or constant?
- Do you finish your work on time or always run after your deadlines?
- Has any life transforming event (like death, financial loss, etc) taken place in your life recently?
Evaluate your answers and you might be able to pinpoint the reason for your stress.
You can also maintain a written record of the day, time, the reason, and the details of the stress attack. Do this for a week and you will be able to pinpoint the reasons and find a way to deal with it.
Learn to Say ‘NO’
In our zeal to do our best, we sometimes forget the magical word ‘No’. Know your limits and capacity and stick to it, whether in your professional or personal time. If you feel it is not possible for you, say ‘NO’. It is always better to do the manageable than to end up with stress and anxiety attack.
Accept the Things that Cannot be Changed
There are always few things in our environment that we cannot change. For example, we cannot change the fact that there are only 24 hrs in a day. There are always things which will be beyond our control. Stressing over these uncontrollable situations will not help you in any way. Always try and see the positive side of your situations and turn them into means of your personal growth. If you feel too much burdened with your situation, talk to your friends and loved ones.
Take out Time for Fun and Relaxation
In today’s hectic schedule we have forgotten to laugh, smile, and have fun. It is very necessary that we take out time to relax and have fun. Weekends are just perfect for this. Do your favorite things over the weekend. Read a good book, go for a massage, spend some time on your hobby, or spend time with your kids or pets.
Apart from weekends, it is also very important to unwind and relax at the end of each day. The best way is to play with your pet, take a long bath, watch your favorite movie etc.
Track your Diet
Proper and healthy diet is the key to prepare our bodies to cope with everyday stress. Always remember to eat a healthy and balanced diet. Include lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains in your diet. Avoid too much of fatty foods and sugar. Start your day with a proper breakfast and have nutritious meals throughout the day.
Exercise
Regular exercise is a must as it keeps your body and mind ready to take on the day’s challenge. A 30-minute exercise thrice a week is enough to keep you fit physically and mentally.
