Being in the grip of a panic attack is a mind numbingly scary ordeal. You are having a normal day with nothing wrong and then you are suddenly having violent heart palpitations. During the holidays you may find yourself dealing with additional stress. Shopping, baking, decorating, entertaining, keeping up with the kids and household chores can take a toll even on the best multi-taskers. How you deal with it will affect your family and your overall well-being.

1. Organize – How you organize your day will make a huge difference. Ask for help or make a “to do” list to help yourself stay on track and on task. Involve your family by delegating simple duties to the kids like picking up after themselves and keeping their rooms tidy. Older kids can help load or unload the dishwasher, fold laundry etc.
2. Eat right – When people are stressed, they eat. Carefully choose what to put in your mouth. Sugary snacks do nothing, but provide a temporary high and add extra pounds. During the holidays you will be around food a lot that are high in calories so you don’t need the extra temptation. For snacking, fuel your body with raw vegetables, leafy greens, fruits and drink plenty of water. Avoid eating on the go as you’re more likely to eat from a fast food restaurant or buy junk food.
3. Exercise – Just 30 minutes of outdoor walking will do the mind and body good. It’s one way to reduce stress, clear your mind and get some fresh air. If you can’t make it outside, try yoga or meditation. In fact, any type of exercise will make you feel better and give you more energy.
4. Vitamin C and Echinacea – Drink your orange juice daily as it boosts your immune system and fights heart disease. Simply adding 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice to one cup of water will provide 20% of the daily value of vitamin C. Echinacea is also an immune booster and it helps in fighting off the common cold and flu. It is an herb, so precautions should be noted with your doctor.

In this day and age there seems to be a lot of chatter going on about the causes of stress, the ways in which you can relieve stress and manage stress, be it emotional stress, workplace stress, chronic stress, or whatever other terminology one might come up with. Stress, stress, stress! We hear this word bandied about all over the place, and not without good reason.
More and more people are being diagnosed with stress or stress related issues. Ideally the best form of stress management is to identify the cause of the stress and remove it. But this does not always seem to be possible.
Sometimes it is difficult to identify the causes of stress as the symptoms of stress are merely the end result of many different causes which have quite simply built up over time. It then becomes such an elaborate and interwoven web of cause and effect that it is almost impossible to unravel. Life can feel as if you are living in a huge stress ball, and no matter which way you turn your stress ball of reality seems to just spin around and around and around.
If you cannot see you way to identifying the root causes of your stress, what can you do to relieve stress at least on a temporary basis? The easiest stress relief technique to learn is that of breathing deeply. Whenever you feel stressed or anxious, you automatically start to breathe in a more superficial way. Your rate of breathing gathers pace and each breath becomes shallower. Just by focusing on each breath and making sure that each breath is deep and felt in the abdomen as opposed to merely in the chest, you will experience a well needed period of relative relaxation and relief from stress.
It is quite remarkable to contemplate the trail of reactions which this simple action is capable of triggering within your body and your mind. As your body relaxes your mind will automatically follow suit. This is always the case; mind and body mirror each other. It is impossible for your mind to be relaxed whilst your body is tense and vice versa.
As your mind relaxes your brain steps back from the “red alert” program which is tripped whenever you feel threatened or stressed. This means that the higher regions of your brain are re-engaged and you can now think clearly once again.

If there are a lot of stressful things which are going on in your life that you feel you just cannot change, then the way forward is to seek ways in which to balance up the stress, or to seek ways in which you can think about it in a different way. Stress, after all, is only stress if you see it that way.
You will usually obtain a great deal of stress relief by incorporating exercise into your daily routine. In this way you can use excess adrenalin and relax your muscles, which again plays back into your mind as it mirrors the relaxation response of your body.
Ensuring that you eat well is also something well worth doing and it takes no more time to eat healthily than it does to eat in an unhealthy style. You could learn various relaxation techniques, like yoga, meditation or hypnosis and these would provide you with definite periods of relaxation and respite from the daily stressors in your life.

Christmas is a season of high expectations. Newspapers, magazines and TV adverts are full of images of the perfect Christmas. We’re given the impression that if we buy this turkey, make that stuffing and give these presents then we too can be like the people portrayed in the photographs. This only exists in fiction; however it still puts us under pressure to excel.
The key to managing any kind of stress is self awareness. When you notice the anxiety building up then you can do something about it. The first step in coping with Christmas shopping stress is to get it in perspective. Ask yourself – if I don’t get that hand fed, organic, free range bronze turkey what’s the worst thing that can happen? Will my family starve? Will I lose a limb? Is it life or death? When you realise that it’s just a case of succumbing to media hype then you can get a grip on your feelings.
If you really want to avoid the stress of Christmas shopping then don’t do any. Many people have become disillusioned with the over commercialisation of Christmas. This has led to a growth in charitable giving at Christmas. Three years ago we opted to only buy presents for the children in the family and we give the money that would have been spent on the adults to help a small local charity. Our relatives were happy to respect this and they make donations, to various charities, of the money they’d have spent on us.
Lots of us love to receive something that’s been hand made so make the most of your creativity. Instead of giving granddad another pair of socks consider a collage of family photos that will remind him of happy family occasions. If baking is your forte what could be nicer than some home made mince pies?
You may enjoy choosing and giving gifts but hate the crush in the shops and queues at the tills then on line and mail order shopping are great alternatives to trudging through cold damp city streets. So many big stores have websites these days that you can shop in your favourite one from the comfort of your own home.
Plan your gift giving. Make a list of everyone you want to give a present to, allocate a sum of money, think about what that individual would really want and shop with something specific in mind. You could ask friends and family to give you a wish list of 3 – 4 items from which you can choose them one item. That way it will be a nice surprise rather than a horrible shock.
Secret Santa can be a fun alternative to buying something for everyone and in the current economic climate will keep it affordable. Often people prefer one really nice present to lots of little things. Alternatively, if you belong to a family that likes lots of little presents to open why not set a challenge, e.g. how many presents can you get for £5 a head?
For those difficult to please young people book tokens and gift vouchers are usually gratefully received, and can be hoarded until the sales where the recipients can get even more for your money. My son loves to see how many bargains he can get with vouchers or money in January.
One friend of mine focuses her gift giving on birthdays and at Christmas all her adult friends get a really beautiful Christmas card containing a Lotto scratch card. It’s thoughtful, fun and could pay out a significant amount.
I think the best piece of advice I was ever given about Christmas shopping was “Don’t take your husband”. And for men – shop before Christmas Eve!
To avoid the heaving high street pick times of the day that aren’t so busy. Now that many shops open late in the evening it’s easier to find a quieter time outside the 9 – 5 rush.
Have a tea break – a study carried out by university College London in 2006 discovered that black tea can lower the levels of the stress hormones in your body. If you prefer coffee then stick to de-caffeinated as caffeine can mimic stress symptoms and increase anxiety. When you take a break use the opportunity to breathe properly – in for 7 and out for 11 will help you to unwind because it’s the breathing out that actually relaxes the muscles. Eating something with slow release carbohydrates will help you to keep you fuelled as you shop.
I suggest wrapping your gifts as you go along rather than leaving it until the last minute. If the thought of gift wrap breaks you out in a cold sweat you can get gift bags now in almost every size and shape imaginable. Some shops and internet outlets will wrap them for you although this will normally incur a small charge.

In Chris Rock’s Bigger and Blacker comedy special on HBO, he jokingly talked about how women want everything. He posed the following question to the women in the audience, “Women, what do ya’ll want?”, and without waiting for them to answer, he replied, “Everything!” He then made a comparison to what it is that men want, and of course, the list was short, simple, and to the point—food, sex, and silence!
Even with the audience roaring with laughter, and to those that may be smirking as you read it, how many of you actually find yourselves in the position of wanting everything? The “I can do it all by myself” mentality, and “I don’t need no help from no one” sentiments. As a woman with a career, my own practice, two children (ages 1 and 3), a husband, and pursing a doctoral degree–I am often asked how I can do all of these things and manage to maintain my sanity and balance to life. The answer is that it isn’t easy, and my own superwoman ambitions have caused me a many days of stress!
The good thing is that I have learned to take better care of myself by realizing that I don’t need to do everything or have everything. Okay ambitious ladies, let that one sink in for a minute—I know it is hard! And to be quite honest, it was hard for me to come to that realization because I am a young driven woman with places to see and dreams to conquer. But somewhere along my ambitious track, I came to realize that the things that were engrained for me to chase after are not as important as I thought them to be. And that ladies, was a real wake-up call for me; however, it was one that gave me such freedom and peace.
Now, in no way am I trying to discourage any diva from pursing the path that you have chosen for your life, because at the young fabulous age of 30, I have done quite well for myself. So I definitely know how being determined, focused, and frankly, a go-getter can benefit and pay big dividends. What I will say is, check your values and ensure that what you are chasing or pursuing aligns with the goals that you have set out for yourself. Make sure that you just are not chasing dreams because it is what society tells you that you have to do or have to have by a certain age. Make sure that you are living a lifestyle well below your current means so that you are not “enslaved” to your job without the freedom to choose your own path simply because you can and not because you have to. For the sisters with families, make sure that you are taking care of your families, and just as important, make sure that you are taking care of yourself too!
I read this article in Fortune or Forbes, and it was an interview of some of the top CEO’s in the country, and one of the questions that they asked these retired CEO’s was, “If you could go back and change something about your career, what would it be?”. Every answer from each of these CEO’s was the same, “Spend more time with family”. This had a huge impact on me and it made me begin to think about what is important. As Americans, we are taught to work hard, save your money, and when you are 67, you can retire and enjoy time with your family! Now, what is wrong with this picture, and how many people have put off things for later that they never get to do?
So if anything women, I just want you to ask yourself:
(1) What really matters most to you?
(2) If you obtain it, what value would it hold for you?
(3) If you didn’t obtain it, then what would that mean for you, and what impact would that have on your life?
(4) What do you have to give up to reach your dreams, and is it important enough to give it up?
(5) In 10 years, when you look back on your life, what would most disappoint you?
(6) In 20 years, what do you think would bother you the most that you didn’t do now?
For the woman that is trying to balance it all, but stressing out or having a hard time to maintain, these questions are a great exercises to help you prioritize the most important aspects of your life. It is an exercise that has worked for me and for my clients. On a personal note, I am happy to say that I am much happier, more focused, and more fulfilled because of it, and my family is grateful for my decision changes as well.
